Katie jogged up the numerous stairs toward the owlery. Her blonde hair loosely bounced as she hurried upwards with a pale blue envelope being clutched in her left hand. Her mum always demanded to know anything and everything that she possibly could when it came to the goings on of her daughter's life. As such, Kaitlin sent home letters nearly every single day just to keep her mother from sending post during every single meal. It was just easier to keep her parents in the proverbial loop as far as grades, social life and anything else they might think was important.
The strong, pungent scent of owl droppings and feathers hit her nose almost instantly as Kaitlin reached the top step. The afternoon sun was shining brightly through the tower windows and the soothing cooing sounds of the owls floated through the warm air. Stepping in through the door, the blonde Gryffindor girl looked about to find an owl suited to send off her letter. Of the school owls, she did have a few favourites. For short reports home, she preferred a small barn owl named Pippen. He had an affinity for sweet breakfast bread. Her much longer letters, like the one today, she liked to send with a large, strong black and brown owl that went by the name of Argon.

Xavier jogged up the stairs, carrying a letter and a package for his brother Adam. He didn't have his own owl still, so he used the school's owls. The small parcel would require a larger owl, though nothing too big. When he reached the owlry, he saw that a younger student was in there. Kaitlin, a friend of his, though they were different ages. He had spent a few nights talking with her in the common room, but again, they had no classes together.
"Hey Kaitin, how's it going?" He smiled at her, opening the cage and allowing one owl to come to him. As he tied the letter and package to the owl's leg, he waited for her response.

Affixing her letter to Argon's leg, she patted the bird and softly cooed, "Mother and father should be waiting for you. It's only been two days but I'd bet anything my mum is going mental without word from me." Petting the large owl again, she went toward the window with Argon and let him go. Just as the flutter from his wings died away in the distance, she heard footsteps coming up the stairs behind her. It wasn't uncommon for other students to come up to the owlery during the day so she wasn't too surprised.
Upon turning, she spotted an older student whom she knew fairly well. Smiling brightly, Kaitlin replied, "Afternoon Xavier. I'm doing rather well, thank you. How are things going for you?" She moved away from the window a little so that he could send his owl just as she had done earlier.

"I'm doing fine, I just needed to send some things to Adam" He explained, then stepped up to the window. Releasing the large owl, he watched him go for a moment, then turned back to her. "I'm heading down for lunch, care to join me?" He asked friendly, knowing that eating alone was never fun. While she was cute, Xavier was spoken for, so he didn't feel uncomfortable in the least talking with her.

Katie watched the immense owl spread its wings and soar out the window as he released it. She always wondered what it would be like to fly without using a broom. Though she always pondered it, she never did dwell on the thought because at least there were plausible methods for flying. Watching until the creature disappeared, just as Argon had, she listened to Xavier's voice. Lunch did sound like a pretty good idea.
"Sure, that sounds like fun. Shall we then?" she inquired, gesturing toward the open owlery door. Kaitlin always thought that Xavier was a pretty nice guy and he did make for a very good friend. Then again, she was usually pretty keen to make friends with her fellow Gryffindors and anyone who cared to talk to her.

"Yeah, let's head down before the good stuff is gone" He laughed, giving her a rather cheery smile. He also tilted his hand towards the entrance. "Ladies first" While most of the other guys though it was pretty pathetic, he always tried to be a gentleman. You never know who's watching was always his mindset.

"Very good to know chivarly isn't dead," she teased in a friendly manner as she started for the door. It really was reassuring to know that not all guys were total prats. Katie was told all sorts of stories about how boys used to be polite and proper gentlemen but she hadn't really seen much of that in most of the boys she was going to school with currently. At least there were still a few decent boys left in the world.

"For a pretty girl like you? Of course not!" He teased back, playfully pushing her on from behind, his hands on her shoulders. He had always wondered what Katie thought of him, but hadn't really pushed it, as he was, as mentioned before, spoken for. "As long as I'm around, chivalry isn't dead" He smiled at her, thinking to himself. Actually, she is pretty cute...

"Oh come now," she laughed softly, "We're already friends. No need to try flattering me." Kaitlin walked a little faster as he pushed her shoulders. It was no easy task considering there were about a million stairs to walk down but she was practically rushing down them and checking over her shoulders every so often to make sure he didn't end up tripping and knocking them both down. "And, by the way, the whole chivarly thing does work for you," she added, laughing a little more

"You still haven't given me that kiss you threatened" He laughed, thinking back to an on going joke they had. "So I don't quite think so" He laughed, blushing a bit now every time she looked back at him. "Wait, who said I was flattering you? I'm just being truthful Katie, you should try it" He teased, sticking his tongue out playfullly.

"In your wildest dreams Xavier darling," Katie laughed as she shook her head and continued down the stairs. It may have been a running joke but she wouldn't jeopardize whatever he had with whichever girl he was with at present. They were too good of friends for her to do something like that. Looking over her shoulder again, she noticed a light pink colour to his cheeks. She had no idea why he'd be blushing...and it certainly wasn't very cold outside so that couldn't be the reason for pink cheeks. "Do you want the truth? Wait...can you even handle the truth Xavier?"

"A guy can hope can't he?" He laughed, then nodded. "If you can handle telling it Katie. I don't think you can" He laughed, as they reached the base of the stairs, then teasingly hugging her from behind, his arms wrapping around her waist. "I will win you over one day" He whispered, then pulled away giving her a slight smirk, as if to let her decide if he was serious.

Kaitlin laughed more and glanced over at him as he hugged her from behind. It was nice having a friend that she could joke around with and tease the way they did. "Trust me, I can handle telling you that you're a dork," she giggled, "Albeit, a charming and funny one...but a dork all the same. Oh, and whatever you tell yourself to get to sleep at night." Even despite his smirk, she couldn't help laughing more. Pushing him playfully, she turned to practically skip along down the corridor toward the next set of stairs.

He shook his head, unable to come up with a retort. He decided though that he could tease her a bit more, without really making it too uncomfortable. "You know I do, just dreaming of when it will be, my dear Kaitlin" He laughed, then jogged to catch up with her. I don't know how she does it...

It was unbelievable just how much he could tolerate her constant little jabs but Katie wouldn't have continued on if she didn't think he could take it. Hearing his footsteps behind her, she pretended to not even notice. It would be impossible for her to not notice him jogging up behind her but, even so, she could pretend anyway. With her attention straight forward, she fought to keep her face expressionless. It was so much harder than she expected but it was worth a shot.
