Enormous, dark thunder clouds threatened to unleash a barrage of large raindrops just outside of the Hogwarts castle. Even despite that, several students braved the impending storm to get a little extra time out on the grounds or slip in a bit more practice on the Quidditch pitch before classes started again tomorrow. Kaitlin Finnigan was an exception to this. Instead of being outside, she was seated on the steps just inside the school's Entrance Hall with her open journal laid open on her lap.
The sound of footsteps and chatter easily drown out the scratching of her silver and gold quill against a middle page in the neatly arranged book. Her looping, flowing letters filled the adjacent page and continued on about half way on her current one. With a sudden lack of inspiration, Katie paused with her writing and tried to think back as to what all had happened, or not happened, over the last day or two. Nothing seemed to come to mind. Sighing softly to herself, she shut the book with a soft snap and then latched the small lock on the side. Perhaps she would think of something if she just sat there a moment or two.

Roxy walked into the castle, her robes damp. She shivered form the cold outside and released her grip on her cloak, glad to be inside. She had been outside looking for her brother, and when she'd found him he'd taken her bag and she's had to chase him for it. She was still breathing hard from running outside and she saw a Gryffindor girl sitting on the steps with a book on her lap. "Hello" Roxy said pulling her wet book bag farther up on her shoulder. "I'm Roxanne."

Head snapping up and a warm smile on her face, Kaitlin looked at the girl who'd addressed her. A fellow Gryffindor, obviously, and a name that Katie recognized vaguely. If she recalled correctly, the other girl, Roxanne, had been sorted during her third or fourth year but age was just a subjective thing anyway. Setting her notebook down, Kaitlin stood up and held out her hand as she introduced, "Kaitlin Finnigan...but you can call me Katie. And it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance Roxanne."
It took a moment or two before Katie realized just how wet the younger student was. She could only assume that Roxanne was probably cold and ready to get back to the warmth of the Gryffindor common room or at least go for a change in the girls' dorms. "If you have somewhere you need to be or something you need to do, please don't let me keep you from it," she said very politely.

"The common room will probably be pretty crowded right now," Roxanne thought out loud, glancing out a window a the darkened, cloudy sky. She could hear raindrops against the windowpane. Usually Roxy didn't mind crowds. She was pretty social, after all. But today she wanted relaxation. "Actually, I like this area, too. It's less noisy, and around this time of day it's warm from all the candles over in the grea hall, and the house elves cooking downstairs." She vaguely remembered a story Uncle Ron had told aout Aunt Hermione's adventures in elf rights.

"Oh, yes, the Gryffindor common room usually does get fairly crowded around this time of day when the weather is less than pleasant," commented Kaitlin pensively, "Well, you're more than welcome to join me. There's plenty of room in here for the both of us." Giving the other girl yet another warm and friendly smile, she glanced down around the large Entrance hall. It really was quite spacious even with the passing crowds. She hadn't really noticed, before, just how warm it really was until Roxanne brought it to her attention. With the cooking, candles and natural body heat from all the students that trudged through the area, it really was quite comfortable.
Before speaking again, she thought carefully about what to say instead of just blurting out some random topic. Instead, she opted to go on about the unexpected turn in the weather. "Isn't it just intriguing how the weather can change from sunny and warm, like it was only a few hours ago, to a complete mess?" she asked conversationally, "I don't recall hearing that it was supposed to be raining…not for at least a week or two anyway. Alas, such is life."
